6 Principles of Psychoanalytic Thought

  • Psychological functioning reflects the impact of genetics, biological endowment, early development, family dynamics, and emotionally stressful experiences throughout life.
  • Early experiences and relationships influence our self-concept and the kinds of relationships we develop, including the relationship between patient and therapist.
  • Much of our thought, emotion and motivation is not fully conscious, a reality that is often unsettling.
  • Regardless of whether they become a focus of treatment, every psychotherapy will be strengthened if the therapist can her and appreciate aspects of the patient’s unconscious mental life.
  • New learning can occur throughout life. Achieving enduring change takes time.
  • The more aware one is of their psychological development and functioning, the greater their resilience and the more comfortable they will be with themselves.
