David I. Joseph, M.D., is a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst with more than 50 years of experience as a clinician, educator, and author of Listening for a Lifetime: The Artful Science of Psychotherapy. His work centers on the power of listening and the doctor-patient relationship, with a strong emphasis on respect for patient autonomy and emotional suffering. He has played a major role in psychiatric education, including serving as Director of Psychiatry Residency Training at St. Elizabeths Hospital and in leadership roles at the Washington-Baltimore Center for Psychoanalysis, Dr. Joseph is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at George Washington University and has served as an examiner for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He also serves as an emeritus training and supervising analyst. Dr. Joseph currently lives in Washington, DC.
